The design of new athletic facilities for Niles West was driven by programmatic and structural requirements. Field House program requirements included a 160-meter interscholastic running track and four P.E. stations, each with a clear height of 24 feet for activities such as basketball.
To accommodate site restrictions, the Niles West Field House was reduced to its essential volume. Since the 24-foot height was needed at the center of the Field House and not above the track, a long-span arch system was an economical solution for the roof structure. This eliminated approximately quarter million cubic feet of unnecessary volume, and reduces yearly operating costs significantly.

Created by a team of OWP/P architects and structural engineers, the Field House has received statewide and national awards for its unique design including the 1997 National AISC Engineering Award of Excellence, the 1996 SEAOI Best Structure Award and the 1995 IASBA Award of Merit.
